New York State Rep. Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, is launching the Five Boroughs Against Trump tour on Monday to speak to voters about how the Trump administration‘s agenda is hurting the city.

Mamdani has ramped up his attacks against President Donald Trump after the latter threatened to cut New York City’s federal funding if the socialist candidate wins the general election in November. Trump is also reportedly considering intervening in the city’s mayoral race in some capacity.

That prospect has been met with pushback from Mamdani and Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, who said Trump should stay out of the city’s affairs and focus instead on national politics.

Trump is reportedly mulling an endorsement of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, to defeat Mamdani this fall. Cuomo has denied speaking with the president about receiving his help, calling such reports “false.” If elected, Cuomo insists he would be the best candidate to contend with Trump while noting he would cooperate with the White House whenever possible.

Mamdani tried tying Cuomo to Trump during a press conference on Monday, saying the two are one and the same.

“We see far too many parallels between Donald Trump and Andrew Cuomo, far too many stories that make clear that both administrations have been characterized by corruption, by a sense of impunity, by an inability of an executive to understand that no means no, a prioritization of the interests of billionaires over working people, and an agenda that is driven by little else beyond the retention and accumulation of power,” Mamdani said.

“As New Yorkers, we know a fraud when we see one,” he added.

The self-described democratic socialist began his anti-Trump tour in Manhattan, with three more endorsements from Democrats: former Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger, New York City Councilman Keith Powers, and New York State Rep. Harvey Epstein.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), who endorsed the nominee after his primary victory, attended Mamdani’s press conference announcing the tour. While many New York Democrats have rallied behind Mamdani, Gov. Kathy Hochul and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have not.

When asked to comment on why Jeffries hasn’t endorsed Mamdani as mayor despite the two meeting last month, Nadler declined to speak to the House leader’s concerns but revealed he personally supports Mamdani because he “would be a very good mayor.”

After touring Manhattan, Mamdani will visit Brooklyn on Tuesday, Staten Island on Wednesday, the Bronx on Thursday, and Queens on Friday.

He is expected to speak to voters’ concerns about the Trump administration’s major cuts to food stamps and housing assistance, as well as its immigration raids across the nation’s cities.

This week’s tour comes as Mamdani surges in popularity with younger voters, particularly those in Generation Z who gravitate toward his socialist policies focused on affordability, such as rent control and government-run grocery stores.

Cuomo targeted Mamdani’s stance on rent control with a policy proposal of his own. The proposal, dubbed “Zohran’s Law” by Cuomo, would prevent wealthy people, like Mamdani, from living in rent-stabilized apartments intended for low-income residents.

The announcement came after Cuomo slammed his opponent for kicking a single mother and her children out of a rent-stabilized apartment that the state assemblyman now owns. The woman and her family were forced to stay at a homeless shelter, the former governor said.

“Today, I am calling on you to move out immediately and give your affordable housing back to an unhoused family who need it,” Cuomo wrote on X in a direct appeal to Mamdani, who earns over $140,000 per year as a state assemblyman. “Leaders must show moral clarity. Time to move out.”

Mamdani fired back at Cuomo over the policy proposal, saying the Democrat-turned-independent simply wants to evict his competition from the apartment.

“Like so much of Andrew Cuomo politics, it is characterized by a petty vindictiveness. It leaves far more questions than it has answers,” Mamdani told reporters.

“How many New Yorkers would this apply to? How many New Yorkers would be evicted from their apartments? How many New Yorkers would have their lives upended by a former governor who is responding to the fact that he was handedly beaten by a tenant of a rent stabilized apartment?”

Mamdani failed to mention that Cuomo’s so-called “Zohran’s Law” would only target wealthy individuals who are taking advantage of the city’s affordable housing system.

DARK CUOMO IS THE HERO GOTHAM NEEDS — AND DESERVES

Despite casting himself as the best candidate for the city’s marginalized and working classes, Mamdani is struggling to win support from black voters. Mamdani recently visited an African Methodist Episcopal church in southeast Queens to reach out to those who may be hesitant to support him. The community is considered part of Mayor Eric Adams and Cuomo’s base.

The tour may, in part, be designed to build Mamdani’s numbers among black voters in New York City. Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens have particularly high concentrations of black voters.
