Roughly two-thirds of Democratic voters say President Joe Biden should withdraw from the 2024 race and allow someone else to take his place at the top of the ticket, according to a new survey conducted by the Associated Press.

That sentiment is especially strong among young Democratic voters, with roughly three-quarters of Democrats under 45 saying they would like him to step aside. About 60% of those 45 and older say the same.

Additionally, only 3 in 10 voters say they are “extremely” or “very” confident in Biden’s mental capacity to serve out a second term, down from the 40% who said the same in February.

The poll comes as Biden faces calls from a growing number of Democrats to withdraw from the race, especially after his first debate against former President Donald Trump last month, during which the president repeatedly stumbled over his talking points and lost his train of thought.

Since then, 20 Democratic lawmakers have publicly called on Biden to withdraw, along with several other prominent party members doing the same.

However, Biden has maintained that he will not drop out, arguing the voters “have spoken” during the party’s primary elections.

“If any of these guys don’t think I should run, run against me,” Biden told MSNBC’s Morning Joe earlier this month. “Go ahead. Announce for president — challenge me at the convention.”

The Democratic National Committee is set to hold its virtual roll call to formally nominate Biden during the first week of August, two weeks before the party holds its convention.
