Democrats warned that Donald Trump winning the 2024 election would be a threat to democracy. They didn’t mention that the threat would be coming from them.

Maine Democrats have banned a state representative from voting on bills or speaking on the floor of the state House. Maine Democrats want to extort a public apology from GOP state Rep. Laurel Libby for posting about the biological male athlete who won the high school Class B state championship in pole vault and clinched the overall girls’ state championship for the school. They claim that Libby violated the “bond of trust and respect” between citizens and legislators by posting a picture of the transgender athlete and that Libby was “attacking” the athlete in the post.

But Libby was attacking Maine’s policies, not the athlete, for allowing a biological man to compete against and beat female athletes. Libby was simply highlighting that the obviously male athlete, who competed in boys’ events just two years ago, should not be competing against girls because he is obviously a boy. For that, Maine Democrats have disenfranchised Libby’s voters by preventing her from doing the job she was democratically elected to do.

Maine Democrats are doing this to try to intimidate state Republicans and voters into staying silent on the issue. Maine got itself into a spat with Trump, who signed an executive order banning male athletes from women’s and girls’ sports, threatening to revoke federal funding for states that don’t comply. Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME) promised to take Trump to court over the ban after Trump publicly called her out during a speech at the White House.

This is not a winning issue for Maine Democrats. A New York Times/Ipsos poll found that 79% of people oppose male athletes in women’s and girls’ sports, including 67% of Democrats. The Democrats who run Maine want to avoid having this debate because they know it is a debate they will lose, and so they chose to take away the representation of Libby’s voters in the state House.

This is the playbook for Democrats on the transgender issue, as even members of former President Joe Biden’s administration showed. They know they can’t win the debate, so they choose the most drastic forms of censorship they can come up with. In the process, Democrats are becoming more of a threat to democracy than anything they have warned about with Trump or any other Republican.
