Liz Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump and fellow Republican Party members continuing to support him as the 2024 GOP presidential candidate, launched criticism against elected leaders.
“What we’ve done in our politics is create a situation where we’re electing idiots,” Cheney said Monday at an event at New York City's Center for Culture and Arts focused on the future of bipartisanship.

Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, joined billionaire and philanthropist David Rubenstein to discuss the path of the Republican Party as the presidential field expands.
“I look at it through the lens of how do we elect serious people? And I think electing serious people can’t be partisan,” Cheney said.
Cheney moved to impeach Trump and pressured other lawmakers to hold the former president accountable. Cheney was appointed to serve on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol in 2021.
Once one of the highest-ranking Republican leaders in the chamber, Cheney lost her reelection to the House to represent Wyoming's at-large congressional district in the 2022 primary.

Cheney’s political action committee has recently increased measures to attack Trump’s capabilities for office, launching an ad in May focused on his refusal to accept his reelection defeat and footage of his followers at the Capitol riot.
Despite being removed from her GOP post, Cheney has hinted at a presidential run, saying at the Mackinac Policy Conference in Detroit this month that she has not ruled out a third-party campaign bid.
