Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is taking a professorship at the University of Virginia as she mulls her 2024 plans.

Cheney will join the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, the school announced Wednesday. The Wyoming Republican was ousted in her GOP primary by an opponent endorsed by Donald Trump after months of clashes with the former president and party leadership.

"I look forward to working with students and colleagues at the Center to advance the important work they and others at the University of Virginia are doing to improve the health of democracy here and around the world,” Cheney said in a statement. “There are many threats facing our system of government and I hope my work with the Center for Politics and the broader community at the University of Virginia will contribute to finding lasting solutions that not only preserve but strengthen our democracy.”

Whitt Clement, rector of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, called Cheney "a strong conservative who never hesitates to put honesty ahead of all other considerations" and "a model of leadership not just for the students at the University of Virginia but for all people concerned for the wellbeing of this country."

Her duties will include giving schoolwide lectures on politics and leading seminar classes. Her tenure runs through the fall semester of 2023, with options to renew.

Cheney lost her 2022 reelection bid to now-Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY). She wasted no time in forming a new political action committee called "The Great Task" to stand against Trump as he tries to reclaim the White House in 2024. Cheney is considered a possible contender for the presidency in 2024 as well, saying in August that she is "thinking" about a bid.

In 2021, she was removed from her position as Republican Conference chairwoman, the third-highest position in the Republican Conference, for her criticism of Trump. Cheney then voted in favor of Trump's second impeachment after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and served as vice chairwoman of the Jan. 6 select committee against the wishes of Republican leadership.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), who also voted to impeach Trump and served on the Jan. 6 panel, recently became a political commentator at CNN.
