The police body camera footage of the deadly arrest of Tennessee woman Lisa Edwards was released Thursday.
The footage, obtained by WVLT, shows the woman's struggle with police just prior to her death. In the video, Edwards can be heard exclaiming that she "can't breathe." She can also be heard exclaiming that she's "going to die" while police accuse her of faking it.
FORD SUED AFTER POLICE CRUISER CATCHES FIRE DURING CALL
Edwards, 60, was pronounced dead in the hospital Feb. 6 after losing consciousness in a police cruiser, according to the Knoxville Sentinel. She was being arrested on trespassing charges. The district attorney later ruled that Edwards's death was the result of a stroke while also claiming that no force had been used in her arrest.
"An autopsy conducted by medical examiners with the Regional Forensic Center concluded that Lisa Edwards died of natural causes, namely 'ischemic stroke due to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease' and 'that at no time did law enforcement interaction cause or contribute to Ms. Edwards’ death,'" DA spokesman Sean McDermott wrote in a news release Feb. 21, the outlet reported.
While Edwards wasn't put in a chokehold, the body camera footage shows the officers manhandling her at several points. When she complains that she can't use her legs, the officers angrily accuse her of pretending. They can be heard refusing to help her on several occasions, in addition to swearing at her.
The interaction started in a hospital parking garage, where Edwards refused to leave after being discharged, asking for more care. Police waved off her concerns and moved to arrest her after she declined to leave voluntarily.
