The Elk Grove Water District, a city in Sacramento County, will host an event on Friday to help low-income households who need assistance paying their water bills.
California extended the state’s Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP, after the COVID-19-era program was initially set to end this fall. LIHWAP will now remain open through March 2024 and offer households a one-time benefit of up to $15,000 for overdue water or sewage bills, paid to their local water service providers. The program offers a credit to water or sewer accounts between $200 and $371.

On Friday, the Elk Grove Water District and Community Resource Project Inc., a local nonprofit group that helps households use government grants, will be at Grove Water District’s main office located at 9829 Waterman Road to help families and individuals apply for LIHWAP.
Organizers say that walk-ins are welcome, and interested residents must bring a copy of their birth certificate or green card, their government-issued photo ID, and a copy of their current or most recent water, wastewater, or stormwater bill. Interested residents should also bring a copy of a benefit letter from any member in their household from federal aid programs such as CalFresh, CalWORKs, or LIHEAP from within the last 120 days and proof of the total gross monthly income for all adult household members for the last 30 days.
