The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program offers low-income families benefits to help pay for heating and cooling systems.

In Virginia, residents can apply for the state's LIHEAP program beginning in one day, so that they can receive assistance to pay for cooling systems as the hot summer months approach.

HOUSE PASSES FIRST BILL TO BLOCK FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S GAS STOVE BAN

The program is open to residents who make no more than $1,699 per month for a household of one, and no more than $3,469 per month for a household of four. In addition to these requirements, the household must include "one vulnerable individual age 60 or older, disabled or under age six," per the commonwealth.

Applications for cooling assistance via the Virginia program are open from June 15 to August 15.

The amounts recipients in Virginia can receive range from as little as $50 to as much as $700.

Recipients are permitted to use the payments to purchase and install window air conditioning units, repair central air conditioning units or heat pumps, pay electric bills for cooling equipment, or for a security deposit for electric power.
