A liberal watchdog filed a lawsuit in Colorado seeking to have former President Donald Trump disqualified from the 2024 presidential ballot in the state.

The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said it filed the lawsuit in district court in Denver, Colorado, on behalf of six Republican and nonaffiliated voters who claim Trump is ineligible under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The lawsuit alleges that Trump violated his constitutional oath as president when he allegedly incited an "insurrection” with the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

“If the very fabric of our democracy is to hold, we must ensure that the Constitution is enforced and the same people who attacked our democratic system not be put in charge of it,” CREW President Noah Bookbinder said in a statement.

“We aren’t bringing this case to make a point, we’re bringing it because it is necessary to defend our republic both today and in the future. While it is unprecedented to bring this type of case against a former president, January 6th was an unprecedented attack that is exactly the kind of event the framers of the 14th Amendment wanted to build protections in case of. You don’t break the glass unless there’s an emergency,” he added.

In the news release announcing the lawsuit, the watchdog hinted at future disqualification lawsuits, saying that "Colorado is a good venue to bring this first case, but it will not be the last."

The notion of disqualifying Trump from the presidential ballot in 2024 based on the 14th Amendment has been discussed by some election officials, with Trump claiming it has "no legal basis or standing" and is another "trick" to attempt to derail his presidential campaign.
