A growing number of Latino voters are siding with former President Donald Trump‘s positions on immigration, expressing support for the construction of a border wall and deportations.

According to an Axios-Ipsos Latino Poll, 42% of Latino adults said they support the building of a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a 12% increase from December 2021. Additionally, 38% support deporting all illegal immigrants to their country of origin, a 10% increase from 2021.

The poll also found that 64% of Latinos support giving the president the authority to shut down the border if too many immigrants try to enter.

The poll reflects Latino voters’ growing opposition to immigration, and growing support for Trump, though President Joe Biden still holds a greater share of support.

Opinions are also divided along national lines. Cuban Americans have the highest portion of support for a border wall, at 58%, compared to just 37% among Mexican Americans and 43% of Central Americans.

Surprisingly, Latinos believe Trump is better on immigration than Biden — 29% say Trump is good on immigration, compared to just 22% for Biden.

Latinos prefer Trump over Biden on other individual issues as well. On the economy, 42% of Latinos prefer Trump over Biden (20%). On crime and public safety, 31% support Trump over Biden (20%).

The Republican Party is viewed very negatively among Latinos, with Trump himself garnering much higher support. Only 17% of Latinos said that the Republican Party shares their values, compared to 32% for the Democratic Party. Trump holds a higher favorability than the Republican Party, at 32%. In comparison, Biden has a 41% favorability rating.

The poll was conducted from March 22-28 by Ipsos, surveying 1,012 Latino adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
