Republican Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose is best positioned to take on Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) in next year's Senate election in the Buckeye State, according to a new survey.

A poll from USA Today and Suffolk University found LaRose trailing Brown in a hypothetical general election matchup 44.6%-45%, a much closer margin than Republicans Matt Dolan or Bernie Moreno.

The survey, conducted from July 9-12, found Dolan trailing Brown 42.8%-46.2% and Moreno trailing Brown 48.4%-41.2%.

In the Republican Senate primary, LaRose has 18.95%, compared to Dolan with 13.68% and Moreno with 8.95%, while 56.84% say they are undecided.

LaRose entered the Ohio Senate race on Monday, saying in his announcement video that he's "a Green Beret, a conservative, a man of faith, and I'm not afraid of a fight." Dolan, a state senator in Ohio, previously ran for U.S. Senate in 2022, and Moreno also briefly ran in 2022 and has been endorsed by the winner of the 2022 Senate election, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) for 2024.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has vowed to remain neutral in the GOP primary in Ohio after picking preferred candidates in other Senate primaries.

Brown, who was first elected to his seat in 2006, is widely seen as one of the three Democratic Senators at greatest risk of losing his seat. Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Jon Tester (D-MT) are also seen as vulnerable in 2024.

In the Republican presidential primary in Ohio, former President Donald Trump has 48.42%, while Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is in second with 23.16%, and no other candidate has above 5%, per the poll.

In general election presidential matchups in the Buckeye State, Trump leads President Joe Biden 43.6%-38.2%, while DeSantis leads Biden 39%-37%. Trump won Ohio in both 2016 and 2020 after President Barack Obama won it in 2008 and 2012.
