France is making the stern step of summoning the American ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, after he alleged the country emboldened extremists by recognizing a Palestinian state.

Summoning an ambassador is a noted form of displeasure, which France is using after calling Kushner’s allegations “unacceptable.” Kushner, who is Jewish, is the father of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared.

“France learned of the allegations of the US Ambassador, Mr. Charles Kushner, who, in a letter to the President of the Republic, expressed his concern about the rise in anti-Semitism in France and reported an alleged lack of sufficient action by the French authorities to confront it,” the French Embassy told the Washington Examiner.

“France firmly refutes these allegations. The rise in anti-Semitic acts in France since 7 October 2023 is a reality that we deplore and to which the French authorities are fully committed to combating, as such acts are intolerable,” they added, concluding that Kushner’s actions “fall short of the quality of the transatlantic partnership between France and the United States and of the trust that must prevail between allies.”

Kushner wrote a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron last week, accusing the country of enabling a “dramatic rise of antisemitism” in the country and not taking sufficient action.

“Public statements haranguing Israel and gestures toward recognition of a Palestinian state embolden extremists, fuel violence, and endanger Jewish life in France. In today’s world, anti-Zionism is antisemitism—plain and simple,” he wrote.

He added that Macron should “act decisively: enforce hate-crime laws without exception, ensure the safety of Jewish schools, synagogues and businesses … and abandon steps that give legitimacy to Hamas and its allies.”

France recently announced that it would recognize a Palestinian state, earning the country condemnation from Israel and from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who called the decision “reckless.”

The country is home to an estimated 500,000 Jews, the largest Jewish population in Europe and the third-largest in the world after Israel and the United States.

Macron’s office called criticism of his decision to recognize a Palestinian state, which some believe will heighten anti-semitism there, “erroneous.”

US FRUSTRATED BY FRANCE AND UK GIVING ‘HOPE’ TO HAMAS WITH PALESTINIAN STATE RECOGNITION

“The analysis that France’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine in September explains the rise in antisemitic violence in France is erroneous, abject, and will not go unanswered,” Macron’s office said.

Macron recently met with Trump and other international leaders last week as they discussed peace in Ukraine.
