The American Library Association is seeking to stifle conservatives’ ability to hold library gatherings as an alternative to the drag queen story hours, according to children’s faith-based book publisher Brave Books.

Brave Books obtained a recording of an ALA presentation and indicated that organization Director Deborah Caldwell-Stone was seeking to “exploit loopholes to block Brave Books story hours.”

Brave Books and children’s book author Kirk Cameron have called on parents and children to gather at libraries on Aug. 5 to “pray, sing, and read Brave Books and other books of virtue.” They are calling it “See You at the Library.”

In the recording, Caldwell-Stone is reportedly heard offering strategies to limit meeting room reservations connected with the Brave Books event and “keep control of your library.”

“What if your library decided to offer a whole host of programs in its meeting room on Aug. 5, making it unavailable for the public? That’s another option for you,” the recording stated.

In December, Cameron blasted several libraries for turning down his request to read his faith-based children’s book As You Grow, calling out the inconsistency of access given previously held drag queen story hours. Following national criticism, libraries began to overturn their initial rejections, and Cameron set out on a nationwide library tour.

“Remember in Lord of the Rings when Pippen the hobbit knocked the skeleton, chains, and bucket down the well into the abyss… well, it seems our Brave Story Hours at public libraries have made enough noise to awaken the Balrogs deep within the ALA,” Cameron tweeted in response to strategies given to limit families from gathering on Aug. 5 for his “See You at the Library” event.

Brave Books encouraged anyone who has experienced difficulty reserving a library meeting room for Aug. 5 to contact the publisher.

“We knew the opposition in local libraries and media would try to derail and demoralize this movement, but we weren’t expecting the top-tier national library leadership to attempt to halt our efforts,” Brave Books said.
