NextImg:Kimmel stands firm on Trump criticism with Colbert

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel called President Donald Trump a “son of a b****” on Tuesday after returning from a brief suspension over a joke about how Trump chose to grieve Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended for roughly a week after Kimmel joked that President Donald Trump was grieving the late conservative commentator by constructing the new White House ballroom. Trump had long criticized Kimmel’s program and called for its end.

During his last episode before the suspension, Kimmel showed a clip of Trump being asked how he was coping with the loss of Kirk outside the White House in the days following his murder. In his response, Trump mentioned the construction of a $200 million ballroom at the White House.

“He’s at the fourth stage of grief: construction,” Kimmel said. “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish, OK?”

Kimmel appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday to discuss the suspension and Trump’s celebration of it. Colbert asked Kimmel about the president’s reaction.

“You started as a radio disc jockey, as you said. When you were spinning platters and making with the banter, did you ever think the president of the United States would be celebrating your unemployment?” Colbert asked.

“I mean, that son of a b****,” Kimmel said to a round of applause. “I never thought we would have a president like this. I hope we don’t have another president like this ever again.”

Kimmel did not endorse any candidate ahead of the 2024 race, as he has avoided endorsements in previous races. However, before then-President Joe Biden abandoned his reelection campaign in July last year, Kimmel hosted then-Vice President Kamala Harris on his program in June.

“I didn’t imagine they would ever be a situation which the president of our country was celebrating hundreds of Americans losing their jobs. Somebody who took pleasure in that, that to me is the absolute opposite of what a leader of this country is supposed to be,” Kimmel added.

“Hear, hear,” Colbert said, as he has also been the target of Trump’s public criticisms.

The White House dismissed the segment.

“I’m sure all three of Jimmy Kimmel’s viewers appreciate his sad excuse for ‘comedy,’” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.
