North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a Russian fighter jet factory on Friday, the fourth day of his visit to the country.

Kim toured the Yuri Gagarin Komsomolsk-on-Amur Plant with the city’s mayor, Alexander Zhornik, and the Khabarovsk Region Gov. Mikhail Degtyarev. This plant, which is in the far eastern Russian city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, manufactures advanced warplanes for the military, including the Su-35 and Su-57 fighter jets, according to Russian state media Tass.

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said after Kim's tour of the plant that Moscow saw “the potential for cooperation both in aircraft manufacturing and in other industries” with North Korea, according to a Russian government press release on its Telegram channel. “We see the potential for cooperation both in aircraft manufacturing and in other industries — this is especially relevant for achieving the tasks our countries face to achieve technological sovereignty."

There's a global spotlight on his trip and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, their first in-person meeting since 2019, due to claims from the United States that they could work out an agreement in which North Korea would provide Russia with weapons to use in its war in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that there were "no agreements" signed on a possible arms deal, "nor on any other topics," though government representatives from both countries have stressed the significance of increasing their cooperation with one another. A day earlier, he confirmed that Kim had invited Putin to visit North Korea and that the latter had accepted the invitation.

Russian officials expected to topple Kyiv quickly, but after 18 months of fighting a grueling war, have sought military support from allies, though Western countries have warned likely partners that the U.S. would not tolerate such action. The war has made Putin and Russia as a whole a pariah on the global stage, forcing them to reach out to allies such as North Korea and Iran.

In the weeks leading up to Kim's trip, U.S. officials warned that negotiations on an arms deal were "actively advancing."

Putin, when asked about military cooperation, noted, “There are certain restrictions,” referencing United Nations sanctions. “Russia complies with all these restrictions, but there are things that we can certainly talk about, discuss, think about, and there are prospects here, too.”

The Russian leader also indicated that his country would help North Korea's space and satellite programs.
