Former special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry said the world will stop the use of fossil fuels despite the “election of any president.”
Kerry appeared at the Viva Tech Conference on Thursday in Paris to share his thoughts on the future of green energy. He claimed the marketplace is already proving that no leader can stop it.
“This transition is absolutely going to happen,” Kerry said. “And the election of any president in my country, or finance minister, or anyone else, is not going to change what the marketplace already decided to do. The marketplace understands this transition is already happening, it has to happen, we have to speed it up, and I think that’s the one thing we should feel the most confident about.”
According to Kerry, tornadoes, floods, mudslides, rising sea levels, and high temperatures are all occurring for “one simple reason: the way we human beings choose to heat, light, and move our vehicles.” He called for one of two solutions, to capture the carbon produced in the energy industry or stop producing it altogether.

Several other speakers were present at the conference, including Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, which produces electric cars; Thibaut Gregoire, co-founder of solar company EnergySage; Christoph Gras, co-founder of Planet A Venture Firm, which invests exclusively in sustainable companies; and Simon Haldrup of Agreena, a company that helps farmers harvest carbon.
Some 194 counties are aiming to decline carbon emissions by 43% by 2030 in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Kerry suggested the goal after 2024 will be to limit warming to 4 degrees.
