MINNEAPOLIS Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin ended the party’s summer gathering earlier than expected due to a shooting in Minneapolis.

“At this moment, we are praying for the families, the students, and the teachers at Annunciation,” Martin said in his remarks as he shed a few tears. “While we wait for more details about what happened this morning, we are sending our support to all of the first responders, law enforcement officers, hospital medical workers, and everybody who has supported the response.”

Martin called the tragic shooting “unacceptable” and “far too commonplace” before asking for prayers and leadership to end the mass shootings.

After Martin’s comments, Bishop Leah Daughtry led the gathering in prayer.

The chairman then noted that Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH) moved to accept the business report online, leading to the DNC summer meeting ending.

“It is with a heavy heart that I come this moment, during this horrific time that unfortunately is no longer unique,” Beatty said. “Members, I’d like to present a motion to suspend. I would like to move to suspend the rules and adopt the reports of the resolutions and rules and bylaws.”

The next DNC meeting will be in Los Angeles from Dec. 11-13.

An active shooter was reported on Wednesday morning at Minnesota’s Annunciation Church. Two children were killed, aged 8 and 10, and an additional 17 people were injured, 14 of them being children.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who was slated to speak at the meeting, responded to the shooting that occurred in her home state.

“I am beyond heartbroken over the tragic news of the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis,” she wrote. “I am praying for all the families impacted by this horrific tragedy. I will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates.”
