Gov. Katie Hobbs (D-AZ) claimed the newest abortion ban in Arizona was exactly what Republican leaders wanted in their efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Hobbs appeared on ABC’s The View on Friday to discuss her opinion on her state making abortion illegal even in the case of rape and incest. The only exception is for mothers whose lives are at an immediate risk. Notably, former President Donald Trump claimed the ban goes too far, but Hobbs claimed Trump was simply feigning sympathy. Trump appointed three of the Supreme Court Justices who ultimately overturned the federal protection around the procedure with their Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision.
“Well, look, I am pretty tired of cleaning up Donald Trump’s messes in Arizona. This is — this is really nothing but political opportunism coming from these folks who wanted this. This is what they wanted when they worked to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Hobbs said. “Now that they see it as a political albatross, they’re all of a sudden trying to run away from it. They can’t do that. They own this. The Dobbs decision paved the way for the Arizona Supreme Court to make this devastating ruling, and they own it.”
According to Hobbs, even though she and Attorney General Kris Mayes have committed not to prosecute doctors for performing abortions, she could not guarantee that women could safely undergo the procedure. Local prosecutors are still able to charge anyone they’d like related to an abortion case. Hobbs predicted that “Arizona women will die under this ban.”

The Arizona House has failed twice to repeal the law. Currently, Republicans hold slight majorities in both chambers of Congress.
As it stands, any person convicted under this law could face two to five years in prison.
