White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre rebuked Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) for asking President Joe Biden to resign from office, calling it “ridiculous.”

Vance, who was just selected as former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate, made his suggestion via X Sunday morning, mere hours before Biden announced he would be withdrawing from the 2024 race. The vice presidential candidate contended that if Biden ended his reelection campaign, he could not justify finishing his term as president because “there is no middle ground.”

“I think that’s ridiculous — seriously?” Jean-Pierre said on ABC’s The View on Tuesday. “But what I will say is the president decided to not run for reelection. That’s it. That’s all he decided on.”

Jean-Pierre also detailed the speech Biden will give Wednesday night, which will be his first speech since bowing out of the 2024 race. The press secretary said Biden will “talk directly” to voters in the country and that there was “no spin” in the president’s decision to withdraw from his reelection bid.

Since Biden’s announcement on Sunday, many Republican lawmakers have asked the president to resign from office, with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) leading these calls. Other lawmakers who have voiced similar views include Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA).

Trump has asked Vice President Kamala Harris to give her own position on Biden leading the country for the next six months, claiming, “She must answer the question.”

Biden has given his endorsement to Harris as his replacement as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, with many other lawmakers also endorsing her. George Clooney, who had written an op-ed asking for Biden to step aside, has also endorsed the vice president.
