Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed criticism of the Trump administration’s handling of deportations, saying “fear” of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids is complicating attempts to rebuild areas affected by the January wildfires.

Bass’s criticism comes after President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard into Los Angeles to quell riots against the deportations of illegal immigrants in June, which the mayor said was unwarranted. When asked what should happen to the undocumented workers in Los Angeles, Bass said “entire sections” of her city are dependent on immigrant labor, “because we are a city of immigrants.”

The mayor also pointed to the repairs needed to the city after wildfires in January, claiming these cannot be provided without the aid of immigrants.

“We have to get the fire areas rebuilt. We’re not going to get our city rebuilt without immigrant labor, and it’s not just the deportation,” Bass said on ABC News’s This Week. “It’s the fear that sets in when raids occur, when people are snatched off the street. And I know you are aware that even people here legally, even people who are U.S. citizens, have been detained. Immigrants who had their papers and were showing up for their annual immigration appointment were detained when they showed up doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing.”

Bass was also asked about a statement made by a border patrol agent during the Biden administration, saying illegal immigrants are “cutting in line” before those trying to come to the country legally. The mayor responded by saying “many” people walk from Central America and “risk their lives” to come to the country.

Despite her criticism against the Trump administration on its handling of immigration, she did “heap praise” for its aid to the city in containing the wildfires from earlier this year. The mayor also advocated for “comprehensive immigration reform.”

Last week, Reps. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) and Maria Salazar (R-FL) debuted a new version of the Dignity Act, which Escobar called “a critical first step to overhauling this broken system.” Salazar, meanwhile, said the bill provides “accountability and a path to stability.”

The White House has been noncommittal in addressing the legislation, though press secretary Karoline Leavitt made clear Trump won’t “support amnesty for illegal aliens in any way.”
