This week, my city’s mayor, Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles), decided to grandstand against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement federal raid in MacArthur Park. 

Bass and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) would have California voters believe that the grave danger in this park is the presence of ICE. The truth? The park has long been a cesspool of risks utterly unrelated to ICE. And that’s down to the city leadership.

McArthur Park has been featured in numerous TV shows, films, and songs. It was once a cute spot for dog and stroller walking and swan-style paddle boating. Sadly, it is now rife with crime, trash, and danger.

It’s a place where women and girls face harassment, crack pipes abound, and the homeless take up residence. Local businesses are shutting down and leaving due to rampant meth use, referred to by some locals as “MethArthur park,” and habitual gang violence.

Despite Bass’ bragging that after a multi-victim shooting in January, she upped LAPD operations in the area and thus decreased crime, her work is woefully inadequate. Instead, since federal agents rolled in to arrest violent illegal immigrants, the mayor has been on a media campaign to create a sob story for the Left. Indeed, even before “No Kings Day”, Bass was showing up on local news and at protests, telling ICE agents they needed to go home. Despite instilling a curfew for parts of the city where riots and anarchists were destroying cars, businesses, and sidewalks, she blamed Trump for any problems.

Newsom and Bass are now doubling down. They say it was a display of “vulgarity and cruelty” for ICE agents to investigate whether or not criminal activity was taking place. They wilfully ignore the fact that it is law-abiding citizens, including legal immigrants, in the neighborhoods in and around MacArthur Park who are suffering. They’re suffering due to the “vulgar” and “cruel” policies of these radical leftists who have failed the city and state.

Let’s be clear, it’s vulgar and cruel that one person a day overdoses in MacArthur Park. It’s awful and inhumane that we allow illegal immigrants and the homeless to overrun a park that should be filled with strolling mothers, children at play, and other citizens pursuing happiness.

At a recent forum on the revitalization of Los Angeles, Dan Biederman, known for his public/private park partnerships, talked about the ratio a park needs to be deemed successful and safe. Newsflash, it needs to have a majority of women present! Not gang members on bikes tagging up every open space of wall or fence they can find.

As a woman in this city, it’s astonishingly distasteful to me that our female mayor would show up and grandstand to protect those breaking the law. Why won’t she stand for law-abiding residents? Why won’t she focus on the violence against women occurring in our city and our parks? Why won’t she acknowledge that black and Hispanic women are disproportionately abused compared to their white counterparts?

We deserve an answer.
