Vice President Kamala Harris is being heavily criticized after claiming most people can't afford a $400 unexpected expense while speaking about reproductive rights on Friday in Iowa.
Harris took the stage at Drake University in Des Moines and said, “Most Americans are a $400 unexpected expense away from bankruptcy,” despite praising the economic policies of President Joe Biden.

The White House touted the success of "Bidenomics" last month, outlining the administration has added over 13 million jobs, including nearly 800,000 manufacturing jobs.
“America has seen the strongest growth since the pandemic of any leading economy in the world,” a statement reads. “Inflation has fallen for 11 straight months and has come down by more than half.”
The Biden administration emphasized the economy is working for working families and “the share of working-age Americans in the workforce hasn’t been higher in more than 20 years.”
Around 37% of Americans don't have enough money to cover a $400 emergency expense, according to the Fed’s 2022 Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households survey released in May.
Harris spoke at length on how Iowa’s six-week abortion ban, which passed this month, will affect women’s reproductive rights by preventing nearly all abortions once cardiac activity can be detected. She criticized Republican state lawmakers and said that while she visits multiple states, many people in “state legislatures don’t even know how women’s bodies work.”

Harris outlined the financial hardships women will face after the abortion ban was enacted by “extremist so-called leaders” in the state.
"If she is a single parent, she's going to have to be able to pay for that child care," Harris said. "She's going to lose time for work. Maybe she has paid family leave. Maybe she doesn't. Maybe she has paid sick leave. Maybe she doesn't. She will have to be able to pay for a plane, train, bus, gas."
