NextImg:Kamala Harris calls Democrats ‘the underdogs’ in 2024 presidential race - Washington Examiner

Vice President Kamala Harris described herself and her “people-powered campaign” as the “underdogs” in this election cycle.

Harris’s comment was made during her first fundraiser since joining the 2024 presidential race, which was held less than a week after President Joe Biden dropped out and gave her his endorsement.

“We have a fight ahead of us,” Harris said. “We got a fight ahead of us, and we are the underdogs in this race, ok? Level said. We’re the underdogs in this race. But this is a people-powered campaign, and we have momentum.”

Different polls have shown either Harris or former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential nominee, in the lead, with the vice president’s comment potentially in reference to these polls.

Since announcing her candidacy in the 2024 race, Harris’s campaign has received a massive spike in fundraising, raising $200 million within the first week. Harris referenced this influx in cash, stating that “we saw the best 24 hours of grassroots fundraising in presidential campaign history.”

The vice president then noted how Trump has been telling “some wild lies” about her record as a politician, which she said was “plain weird,” drawing laughter from her audience.

Early-Sunday morning, Trump called Harris “the ORIGINAL Marxist District Attorney,” warning that she would “destroy” the United States in the same manner “she destroyed San Francisco.” He also wrote that Harris supports “ending cash bail nationwide” and “endorsed DE-FUNDING THE POLICE.”

The uptick in support for Harris has been dismissed by several observers, including commentator Piers Morgan and Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH), who contended she is undergoing a “honeymoon” period in this campaign cycle. Morgan predicted that this period will last for about a week, while Sununu predicted it will last “for about 30 days.”
