A district judge barred the deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois for 14 days, issuing a temporary restraining order on Thursday evening.
Judge April Perry denied the Trump administration’s request for a stay on the order, which expires on Oct. 23 at 11:59 p.m. The judge said the court would hold a hearing on Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. to decide whether there should be a second 14-day restraining order after the initial order expires.

The Trump administration is “temporarily enjoined from ordering the federalization and deployment of the National Guard of the United States within Illinois,” Perry wrote in Thursday’s order.
Illinois and Chicago filed the lawsuit on Monday, requesting the temporary restraining order after the White House confirmed President Donald Trump had ordered 300 National Guard troops to “protect federal officers and assets” in Chicago.
“I find that allowing the National Guard to deploy at the Broadview processing center or anywhere else in Illinois will only add fuel to the fire,” Perry said in court, according to the New York Times. Several riots and protests have broken out outside of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview that Perry was referring to.
Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) celebrated the order on X on Thursday evening.
“Donald Trump is not a king — and his administration is not above the law. Today, the court confirmed what we all know: there is no credible evidence of a rebellion in the state of Illinois. And no place for the National Guard in the streets of American cities like Chicago,” Pritzker wrote.

Former President Joe Biden appointed Judge Perry to the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois in 2024.
The White House did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s requests for comment.
