Joy Behar called for applause during The View on Thursday on behalf of former Vice President Mike Pence for his actions on Jan. 6, 2021.
Behar began a segment on the show with Pence, a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, at its center. During a recent speech, Pence took a jab at former President Donald Trump, saying, "The Republican Party did not begin on a golden escalator in 2015," in reference to Trump's initial campaign that won him the presidency in 2016.

"Let's talk about Mike Pence because Mike Pence is stepping up a little bit. First of all, I'd like to salute the guy because he basically saved the country in that moment when he followed the law," Behar said, referring to when Pence certified the votes in the 2020 election on Jan. 6, 2021, which further solidified Joe Biden as the president-elect.
"Let's give him the kudos," Behar went on while clapping her hands, encouraging the rest of the audience to applaud. "Welcome to the fight, Vice President Pence."
Pence and Behar have butted heads surrounding religion. When Behar conflated Christian belief with mental illness, Pence personally called her to apologize, which she did on a later episode, citing the phone call.
"He's in very low single digits in his campaign, and he needs to distinguish himself," co-host Ana Navarro said of Pence. "He needs to find a lane of whom to appeal to, and I think, you know, for people like me who grew up in the Republican Party of yesteryear, the Republican Party of Ronald Reagan, I don't recognize what is today defined as the conservative movement. He is absolutely right."
