Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) addressed controversies over ‘woke’ marketing agendas during remarks at the religious conservative activist conference Road to Majority on Friday.
Hawley focused on his Christian faith for most of the speech, claiming corporations are pushing a “religion of woke.” Hawley vowed to defeat a new form of 'cultural Marxism,' saying it has taken over the Democratic Party and the media while taking root in universities.

“These new Marxists want to give America a new religion. They want to impose on us the religion of woke,” Hawley said. “It is the religion of transgenderism, critical race theory and open borders, multiculturalism, and they are shoving it down our throats.”
Hawley, who said he believes Marxism has taken over control of the Democratic Party, called Marxism the greatest threat the nation is facing. He added that it has “infected even our corporations.”
Hawley called out Target for trying to force “gender ideology” and “transgender ideology” on people, and Bud Light for telling “every red-blooded, blue-collar working man in this country that he needs to be reeducated.”
The two companies have been at the center of right-wing attacks following their support of the LGBT community through their products and advertisements. Target, which released its Pride collection at the start of May, removed some LGBT-themed products after violent threats against employees, stating the department store continues to stand with the community. Bud Light was heavily criticized by conservatives after Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender social media influencer, promoted the beer on Instagram.
Hawley, who has been one of many Republicans to use 'wokeism' as an attack on the Left, denounced liberal ideology and claimed Democrats are attempting to be the “new priests of wokery.
“The leftist elites have proclaimed themselves as the priests of this new religion. They're the high priests,” Hawley said, adding that the country does not agree with them.
Hawley also expressed disdain toward fellow GOP members who hold back criticism against corporations, stating corporations are not people and should not control the country.

“I've got news for these corporations, these woke corporations. We are not going to surrender this nation to the cultural Marxist in the C-suite.
“We may not have started this culture war, but we’re going to win it,” Hawley said.
