House Oversight Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) threatened to hold FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress over the bureau's failure to comply with subpoenas regarding the panel's investigation into the weaponization of the FBI.

In a letter sent to the FBI director Monday, Jordan gave the FBI a deadline of July 25 to "substantially improve" subpoena compliance before the House Oversight Committee considers "compulsory action," which would include the possibility of holding Wray in contempt of Congress. Jordan cited two prior instances in which he claimed Wray failed to comply with a subpoena properly.

NEW YORK CITY PUSHES THE LIMITS OF GREEN POLICIES

"On February 3, 2023, the Committee issued a subpoena to you for documents and information regarding the FBI’s targeting of concerned parents who speak out at school board meetings," he wrote. "Similarly, on April 10, 2023, the Committee issued a subpoena to you for documents and information related to the FBI’s profiling of traditional Catholics as domestic extremists. To date, the FBI’s compliance with these subpoenas has been wholly inadequate and has materially impeded the Committee’s oversight efforts."

Jordan argued that the committee had made "several accommodations" and persistently reached out over several months, all in a good-faith attempt to negotiate and work with the agency. As he views the FBI's approach to the committee as inadequate, he notified Wray that "if the FBI does not improve its compliance substantially, the Committee will take action—such as the initiation of contempt of Congress proceedings—to obtain compliance with these subpoenas."

Elsewhere in the letter, Jordan alleged that evidence showed that he was hiding information demanded by the committee in direct violation of the subpoena.

"The Committee’s subpoenas impose legal obligations on you to comply and produce responsive materials. Thus, your refusal to produce documents responsive to the Committee’s subpoenas—months after the return dates—is unacceptable," the letter stated.

Jordan and House Republicans have butted heads with Wray and the FBI since taking control of the House, alleging that it has persecuted conservatives based on their beliefs. Wray has vehemently denied the accusations.
