Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI), who voted for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) in both rounds of voting for a speaker on the House floor, has embarked on a fact-finding trip to Israel while the House plans to continue voting for a new speaker through the weekend if necessary.
According to a statement reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the congressman said, “After retiring from the military in 2014, I made a solemn promise to the Jewish people that if anything like what took place on October 7, 2023 were to ever happen, that I would help them and their nation to the best of my ability."

The congressman served as a Navy SEAL for 26 years before being elected to Congress.
"I am keeping that promise," he said.
Van Orden's office did not provide confirmation or a comment to the Washington Examiner.
The Wisconsin Republican's impromptu trip to Israel is "to witness what has and is taking place so that I can speak from an informed position," he reportedly said.
He touched down in Israel on Friday morning, according to the Wisconsin newspaper. He will be visiting medical facilities while he is there and meeting with Israelis and various military and government leaders so that he can gauge "a holistic understanding of the current and future" needs.
The length of his trip in the Middle Eastern country is unknown.

His absence from the House during a contentious speaker battle will be a disadvantage for Jordan, who continues to struggle to garner the necessary votes to get elected. Even with Van Orden present, Jordan can only afford to lose four votes. Jordan has a significant amount of work to do with 22 defections as of the Wednesday floor vote and predictions that more lawmakers will turn against him during a third vote.
