NextImg:Johnson uncertain that ‘repeal and replace’ is on House agenda for Obamacare - Washington Examiner

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) appeared doubtful that a “repeal and replace” action for Obamacare would hit the lower chamber’s floor if Republicans maintain the majority.

Efforts to repeal Obamacare have been on and off the congressional docket since the Affordable Care Act took effect in 2010.

“I don’t know that repeal and replace is on the agenda,” Johnson told NOTUS on Thursday when asked about Obamacare at the Republican National Convention. “I think that we need dramatic changes to healthcare, and there are lots of ideas on how to do that.”

Johnson said the GOP’s “Doctors Caucus” would come up with some ideas on how to address healthcare, and he discussed some of the proposals he championed as the former leader of the conservative Republican Study Committee.

Former President Donald Trump threatened to replace Obamacare again late last year, saying he was “seriously looking for alternatives” if he won a second term. He failed to replace it when he was president.

Since Democrats took the House majority in 2018 and Republicans later snatched it back, efforts to repeal Obamacare have fizzled, and action hasn’t managed to produce results. Johnson spoke of a story when he was a freshman in the House and he went to then-House Speaker Paul Ryan and asked where the bill was to repeal Obamacare.

The answer he said he got was that Republicans were working on it. Now, with Johnson as speaker, Republicans are still doing so.
