Conservative "Joe the Plumber," known for his activism in the 2008 presidential election, has died at the age of 49 from pancreatic cancer.

Joe the Plumber, whose real name is Samuel Joe Wurzelbacher, was known among conservatives for confronting Barack Obama about his tax plan and whether or not he would have to pay more taxes in an Obama presidency. His death was made known on Sunday by conservative radio host Derek Hunter, who announced his death on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Horrible news," Hunter said. "My good friend Joe Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber, passed away this morning at the age of 49 from pancreatic cancer. He was a good man and an exceptional friend."

A GiveSendGo fundraiser was created online to help raise for Wurzelbacher's cancer treatment, which was updated on Sunday to address Wurzelbacher's death. Prior to his death, one of Wurzelbacher's goals was to move his family to his wife's hometown to be "surrounded by family," which the family was able to do last week.

"I won't forget that smile he gave me," said Katie Wurzelbacher, Joe's wife. "It brought him peace knowing we were all together by family. And everyone who helped us move also brought Joe that peace."
