NextImg:Jillian Michaels leaves California over government's 'mismanagement'

Fitness guru Jillian Michaels shared her insight into why she fled California for Florida.

There has been an exodus of California residents, including Michaels, in addition to corporations moving out. Michaels’s announcement that she has moved to Florida comes as her podcast has become increasingly politically charged, with various commentators appearing to discuss policy.

“Well first off, let’s look at the cost of living,” Michaels said Monday on Hannity. “There is a mismanagement element that, again, is inconceivable. How is it that gas in California is twice as much than in Florida, for example? Why is crime going up constantly, day after day after day? But when you leave California, people are leaving because of the cost of living and because of the crime, but they’re also bringing some of those woke values with them that the people in the red states do not want, and for good reason.”

According to U-Haul, California had the most self-movers rent equipment to move out of state without a replacement rate of movers coming in. As a result, the company ranked California last in net growth for the fifth year in a row.

“Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state,” U-Haul International President John Taylor said of the ranking. “Out-migration remains prevalent for a number of markets across the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast — and particularly California.”

The move-out rate has dramatically increased in recent years following the coronavirus pandemic, during which Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) enacted heavy restrictions on businesses and schools in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading.

Meanwhile, more people are moving to Florida than ever before, with the state reporting the most migration in the nation in 2022. Its population increased by 1.9%, making it the top growth state for the first time since 1957. Last year, Florida had a move-in rate of 43%, but most cited retirement for moving in.

Texas also joined Florida as a top state for people to move to in 2024. Last year, 85,267 residents moved to Texas from other states, making it the biggest beneficiary of internal U.S. state-to-state migration.
