NextImg:JFK most popular recent former president, poll finds

A new Gallup poll found that former President Donald Trump has the second-lowest approval rating among recent presidents, while John F. Kennedy has the highest.

Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush ranked the highest in retrospective approval of any president in the last 60 years, according to the survey. JFK received an overall 90% rating, while Reagan and Bush came in at 69% and 66%, respectively.

Gallup asked Americans whether they approved or disapproved of nine previous presidents, in retrospect.

While seven of the nine received majority approval, Trump and Richard Nixon ranked the lowest at 46% and 32%, respectively. The disapproval ratings of both Republicans were quite large, as Trump came in at 54% disapproval and Nixon at 65%.

Gallup also polled respondents on Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and George W. Bush in the final results, excluding Lyndon Johnson and Gerald Ford, as about 20% of Americans could not give substantive opinions on the two former presidents in 2018. Johnson and Ford have not been included in the survey since.

“Americans tend to be more charitable in rating presidents after they leave office than while they served as commander in chief,” read Gallup’s news release. “Those evaluations tend to grow increasingly positive the longer former presidents are out of office. Kennedy stands head and shoulders above other former presidents, but majorities approve of how most former presidents handled their job, except for Trump and Nixon.”

Trump’s retrospective rating comes as he is once again running for president in 2024. Though most voters disapprove of him per the poll, Trump ranks very highly among Republican voters, with 91% approval.

JFK’s rating is notable in that he is the only former president to see very high approval regardless of political affiliation. Among all parties, JFK sits above the rest, between 89% and 92%.

The rating for JFK comes at a time when the Biden administration recently released over 2,600 documents relating to his 1963 assassination. The former Democratic president has also returned to the public spotlight due to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s bid for the 2024 presidency and comments regarding supposed CIA involvement in his uncle's death.

The Gallup poll surveyed 1,013 U.S. adults from June 1 to June 22 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
