Vice President JD Vance championed the Trump administration‘s support for law enforcement during a breakfast event Wednesday morning celebrating National Police Week.

The vice president, joined by second lady Usha Vance, held an intimate breakfast with roughly two dozen state and local law enforcement officers at their residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington.

“We love you guys, and we’re grateful for the job that you do, and our administration has made a very proud commitment to stand by American law enforcement,” Vance told the group gathered to hear his remarks, on behalf of the president, who was unable to attend the event.

As Vance commemorates police officers, President Donald Trump is on a Middle East tour with stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Support for police officers has long been a key component for Trump and Vance, who have previously slammed efforts to defund the police.

“The policy component is we want to make it easier for police officers to do their jobs,” Vance said. “We want to make it harder for people to sue police officers when they’re acting appropriately in the line of duty.”

Vance then talked of the death of Hamilton County, Ohio, Deputy Sheriff Larry Henderson.

Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, was charged in relation to Henderson’s death, allegedly seeking revenge after Cincinnati police killed his son, Ryan Hinton, 18.

“He was helping people at the University of Cincinnati when he was mowed down by a bloodthirsty criminal who exacted revenge for something a police officer was actually legally entitled to do,” Vance said about Henderson.

“And when I think about why that senseless crime happened, obviously, you’ve got to place blame on the guy who committed the crime,” Vance continued. “But I also think a lot of blame falls on American leadership, who, for too long, have made our police officers out to be enemies instead of the great public servants that all of us know that they are.”

The vice president also claimed that “moral leadership matters just as much as the public policy” in his unequivocal support for law enforcement.

“From the president on down, this administration stands behind you guys,” Vance claimed.

Vance is scheduled to deliver a speech on Thursday at the 44th annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at the Capitol. The GOP-led House of Representatives is voting this week on various pro-law enforcement measures.
