Former Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) is leaving the door open to challenging Mitt Romney (R) in 2024 as the Utah senator mulls his own reelection plans.

It's “not something I am actively pursuing, but I am keeping all my doors open,” he told the Washington Examiner in a brief statement.

Chaffetz was first elected to represent the Beehive State in 2009 until he stepped down from office in 2017. Chaffetz raised his national profile as chairman of the House Oversight Committee and has since landed himself a job as a Fox News contributor.

As Romney considers running for a second term in the Senate, several Republicans are looking to Chaffetz to see if he’d be interested in challenging the incumbent for his seat.

“Look, I love what I am doing now. There’s a reason why I left,” Chaffetz told attendees at the Washington County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner over the weekend, according to the Deseret News. “But I’d love to serve again in some capacity.”

Chaffetz has previously indicated he would be open to running against Romney, with the former Utah representative telling Fox News host Sean Hannity he would consider a challenge just days after Romney voted to impeach former President Donald Trump in 2021. Chaffetz has maintained he is “dedicated” to his job at the new outlet but would consider a return to politics.

Romney has not yet said if he will run for office in 2024. When asked by the Washington Examiner, the Utah senator's office pointed to comments he made earlier this week in which he remained tight-lipped on his future plans.

“I’m confident that I would win if I decided to run,” he told local news outlets, adding that he expects to make an announcement in either the spring or summer. “I’ll have the resources, I have an extraordinary team, and I believe the people of Utah would be with me.”
