House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) is requesting to interview chief patrol agents for every sector of the southern border.

The committee has already heard from two chief Border Patrol agents but is now seeking the transcribed interviews of the other seven chiefs, according to a letter sent to Customs and Border Protection acting Commissioner Troy Miller on Sunday.

"The uniqueness of each sector demonstrates a need for the Committee to obtain additional information regarding other sectors on the southern border," Comer said. "As one witness emphasized, ‘if you’ve seen one Border Patrol sector, you have only seen one Border Patrol sector.’ One of the witnesses testified that Border Patrol agents have valuable information and experience to guide lawmakers in search of legislative solutions. The Committee believes Chief Patrol Agents managing other sectors have additional, valuable information that will assist the Committee in fully understanding the crisis at the southern border."

Comer is asking to hear from the chiefs of the San Diego, El Centro, Yuma, El Paso, Big Bend, Del Rio, and Laredo sectors.

The requests for interviews continue the push to investigate the handling of the southern border under Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas as illegal border crossings surge.

Testimonies of four chief Border Patrol agents were originally blocked by the Department of Homeland Security, with Comer slamming the agency for not being transparent and not permitting congressional oversight. Two of the agents, from the Tucson and Rio Grande Valley sectors, eventually testified before the committee earlier this month.

House Republicans have made the southern border a chief policy issue, with some members calling for Mayorkas to be impeached for his handling of border security. Mayorkas has said his critics "will not force me out," and the DHS has hired counsel ahead of a potential impeachment.
