Democratic strategist James Carville warned Democrats who are excited about Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign not to get too comfortable ahead of a “very difficult race” in November.

“[The race is] gonna be very close,” he said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Wednesday. “And I understand that people [are] feeling a lot better and excited, but that excitements got to be tempered with realism, and the realism is, she has a tough campaign to run, and as you say, she’s got several things she’s got to accomplish at the same time.”

“But having said that, there’s been real growth in Vice President Harris. I mean, you can just see the difference,” Carville continued. “She just looked so confident to me yesterday.”

“I liked what I saw, I’ll be honest with you,” he added.

Harris spoke in Wisconsin on Tuesday at her first campaign rally, where she announced she had secured the support of enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination.

In her speech, she leaned into her background as a prosecutor in California, saying she “took on perpetrators of all kinds — predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own game.”

“So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” Harris said.

Harris’s campaign said Tuesday that it raised more than $100 million between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening after President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race.

Polls conducted after Biden dropped out show Harris neck-and-neck with former President Donald Trump, with one poll showing Trump leading by one percentage point in support among registered voters and another showing Harris leading by two percentage points.
