With its shift from a globalist to a populist party for nearly a decade, the Grand Old Party has now made the shift from former President Ronald Reagan to President-elect Donald Trump.

In the latest Napolitan poll shared with Secrets as Congress certified the second election of Trump on Monday, a big majority of people said they identify more with Trump than Reagan.

Led by younger people, 61% of Republican and Republican-leaning voters said they are Trump Republicans, while 27% said they are Reagan Republicans.

What’s more, even among those who were old enough to remember the Reagan era, 54% now consider themselves Trump Republicans, the poll analysis said.

The Republican results of the pre-inauguration poll clash with the lack of unity shown by Democrats. Scott Rasmussen’s survey found that Democrats are divided, 45%-44%, over whether they are progressives or traditional Democrats.

Rasmussen told Secrets that Republicans see similarities between Reagan and Trump and that the incoming president’s legacy and hold on the GOP are to be determined.

“The Republican Party is officially the party of Trump,” said Rasmussen, president of RMG Research.

“Despite their many differences, Reagan and Trump are also very similar in many ways. Both men challenged the status quo and faced significant resistance from within their own party. They both overcame that resistance to become the very definition of their party,” he said.

“Both men also fundamentally changed the political dynamics of their era. Reagan succeeded in becoming, along with FDR, one of the two most influential presidents of the 20th century. The lasting impact of Trump will be determined in the years to come,” Rasmussen added.
