The Israeli military has used a new weapon called the "Iron Sting" as it continues its attacks against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

Elbit Systems, which builds the Iron Sting, a precision mortar, initially unveiled it in 2021. The Israeli military used the weapon this weekend for the first time. The system uses a laser- and GPS-guided mortar munition that is designed to engage targets precisely while reducing the possibility of civilian casualties.

"Thanks to the precision, lethality, and expertise of the fighters, the Maglan unit in cooperation with the Air Force took out dozens of terrorists with a variety of means, one of which is the precision mortar 'Iron Sting,'" Col. Omer Cohen, the commander of the Commando Brigade, said.

The Israeli air force said they used the new weapon to prevent "dozens of terrorists using a variety of weapons, including an innovative and accurate mortar bomb."

“The technology made available to the IDF by Israeli industries changes the battlefield and provides our forces with more accurate and effective means. The integration of 'Iron Sting' in the IDF, corresponds to the vision presented in the military’s 'Tnufa' multi-year plan," Israeli government leader Benny Gantz said in 2021. "It also fulfills the IDF’s needs, adapting combat capabilities to contend with enemies hidden within civilian, urban environments, while meeting the legal and moral standards set by the State of Israel.”

The Israelis have launched thousands of airstrikes in Gaza following the unprecedented terrorist attacks in Israel about two weeks ago that claimed the lives of roughly 1,400 people. They intend to invade Gaza in the coming days or weeks to ensure that Hamas, the terrorist organization that is the de facto government of Gaza, will not have the capability to conduct a similar attack.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the death toll in Gaza since Oct. 7 has eclipsed 5,000. The ministry, which Hamas controls, has already spread misinformation during the conflict, so the accuracy of their total is questionable.
