Brazilian authorities, along with the help of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, thwarted a planned terrorist attack against the Jewish community that was allegedly directed by Iranian-backed Hezbollah.

Brazil's Federal Police announced on Wednesday that it had served two arrest warrants and carried out 11 search and seizure warrants across Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and the federal capital, Brasília. The department did not provide more details about what the alleged terrorist attack could have looked like but said they launched Operation Trapiche, which in part will include obtaining evidence of possible terrorist recruitment.

"The Brazilian security services, together with the Mossad and its partners in the Israeli security community, alongside additional international security agencies, foiled a terrorist attack in Brazil, planned by the Hezbollah terrorist organization, directed and financed by Iran," the official account of the Israeli prime minister said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"This was an extensive network that operated in additional countries. The Mossad thanks the Brazilian security services for the arrest of a terrorist cell that was operated by Hezbollah in order to carry out an attack on Israeli and Jewish targets in Brazil," the statement added. "Given the backdrop of the war in Gaza against the Hamas terrorist organization, Hezbollah and the Iranian regime are continuing to operate around the world in order to attack Israeli, Jewish and Western targets."

There has seemingly been an increase in antisemitic hate crimes globally since Hamas's Oct. 7 terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of roughly 1,400 people, as Israel has forcefully responded militarily against the terror group in Gaza. Israel's heavy military response, which has left thousands of civilians dead, has resulted in condemnation from some countries. While United States officials remain supportive of Israel, administration officials have urged Israeli leaders to do more to prevent civilian casualties.

There have been 467 antisemitic incidents in Brazil since Oct. 7, a 961% increase in comparison to the previous year, according to the Brazilian Israelite Confederation.

Hezbollah is a terrorist group that is primarily based in Lebanon and the group is more sophisticated militarily than Hamas. There have been major concerns that they could attack Israel from the north, thus creating a two-front war for Israel, and potentially expanding it to a regional conflict. The group's leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, indicated his hesitancy to widen the war on Hamas's behalf recently in his first public comments since the outbreak of the war.
