NextImg:Israel questions why UN and international agencies have not condemned Hamas use of hospitals

Israeli leaders are pushing the international community to condemn Hamas's use of hospitals as many, they argue, have remained silent on the subject.

Israeli officials have accused Hamas of using the Shifa Hospital in Gaza as a main command post and, since raiding last week, have provided various pieces of information seemingly backing up their claim, including the discovery of weapons and a tunnel shaft that may connect to Hamas's significant tunnel infrastructure. The Israel Defense Forces released footage from the hospital this weekend that appeared to show Hamas fighters bringing two suspected hostages through the hospital.

"We're demanding international accountability now from the global agencies that have said absolutely nothing about Hamas's abuse of hospitals as human shields," Eylon Levy, an Israeli government spokesperson, said in an interview with BBC Radio.

Levy's criticism is a common one from Israeli officials who argue the United Nations and other international organizations have not firmly condemned Hamas or the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of roughly 1,400 people, the vast majority of whom were civilians, while another approximately 240 people were kidnapped and brought back to Gaza. Only five have been freed, and two of them have been found dead. The well-being of the rest remains unknown.

The U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution last week that "calls" for humanitarian pauses in Israel's war against Hamas and for "the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups," but it does not condemn Hamas's Oct. 7 attack.

"The Security Council's resolution is disconnected from reality and is meaningless," Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan said. "Regardless of what the Council decides, Israel will continue acting according to int'l law while the Hamas terrorists will not even read the resolution at all, let alone abide by it. It is unfortunate that the Council continues to ignore, not condemn, or even mention the massacre that Hamas carried out on Oct. 7, which led to the war in Gaza. It is truly shameful! Hamas's strategy is to deliberately deteriorate the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and increase the number of Palestinian casualties in order to motivate the U.N. and the Security Council to stop Israel. It will not happen. Israel will continue to act until Hamas is destroyed and the hostages are returned."

Israeli President Isaac Herzog reiterated that sentiment on Fox News on Monday, and he called the U.N. a "hypocritical organization where they are playing for many, many years with antisemitic language and rhetoric ongoing every year, automatic resolutions against Israel."

The criticism that international leaders are not critical enough of Hamas and its tactics that jeopardize the safety of civilians is also supported by some on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) accused World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of stoking a "disinformation campaign" that benefits Hamas earlier this month during a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee hearing focused on anti-Israel bias at the U.N.

"Since Oct. 7, the vast majority of statements by the WHO and its director have targeted Israel, expressly or by implication," said U.N. Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer, one of the witnesses at that hearing. "Hamas is seldom mentioned. The same is true regarding statements by numerous other U.N. humanitarian agencies such as OCHA, WFP, UNDP, UNHCR, and, of course, UNRWA."
