Nine Americans were killed in the massive terrorist attacks in Israel this weekend, according to the U.S. State Department.

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed Monday morning that the death toll of Americans had increased from four to nine as more information has become available. He would not specify how many Americans are still unaccounted for or how many were taken hostage by Hamas, the terrorist group that carried out the unprecedented attacks.

"I can confirm that nine Americans unfortunately have lost their lives as a result of these horrific attacks in the region. We are in close contact with the government of Israel as they continue to conduct security operations to locate missing U.S. citizens, missing Israeli citizens," Miller said in an interview on CNN. "And we are, of course, in close contact with the families of these nine deceased Americans and offering them any consular assistance that we can provide."

The number of Americans who are missing has changed as “the Israel military continues to conduct military operations,” Miller explained, noting that the department “cannot confirm” that Americans are among the hostages who were forcibly taken back to Gaza.

“There are Americans who are unaccounted for, and our first priority is to locate those Americans, find out what their status is in the coming hours and days," he said.

On Saturday morning, terrorists from Hamas and other groups carried out a multipronged attack that overwhelmed Israeli forces. Hamas launched thousands of rockets into southern Israel, while Israeli officials then said roughly a thousand militants crossed the border and began indiscriminately targeting women, children, the elderly, and Israeli forces. Hamas has claimed it took more than 100 people hostage and brought them back to Gaza.

In some areas, Hamas fighters overwhelmed nearby Israeli communities and temporarily took control of them, but Israel has since regained those areas.

Authorities have said more than 700 have died in Israel and over 2,300 are injured, while about 493 people have been killed in Gaza, with 2,751 injured in Israel's subsequent military response.

Israeli leaders declared war on Sunday and have ordered a "total siege" of Gaza.
