San Francisco may have recently won the top spot as the worst-run city in the United States, but Oakland finished second-worst in that same study, and San Francisco’s neighbor across the bay is having a rough couple of days.
First, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the city’s budget woes, including a $292 million gap between revenues and spending that needs to be closed over the next two years. While the city is facing deep cuts to the fire and police departments, the San Francisco Chronicle found that the city’s payroll had grown by 37% in just the last six years, including 500 employees making more than $300,000 a year.
Then, on Juneteenth, a gun battle broke out near Lake Merritt when around 5,000 people gathered for an illegal sideshow involving motor vehicles and motorbikes. Four people were shot during the fight, and one died.
Then, on Thursday, the FBI raided the home of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and confirmed to local reporters that the raid was part of “a public corruption investigation of Thao and her boyfriend.” Other local outlets reported that the home of California Waste Solutions Director Andy Duong was also raided by the FBI on Thursday and that Duong recently paid for a Thao junket to Vietnam.

San Francisco hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1964, and Oakland hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1966. These two cities occupy some of the most beautiful real estate in the world and should be two of the absolute best places to live in the world, not just the country.
Instead, they have become models of Democratic Party ineptitude, overrun with homelessness, violence, crime, and corruption.
