Iranian authorities have executed at least six people accused of spying for Israel since the conflict between the Islamic Republic and the Jewish state broke out two weeks ago.
Iran hanged three men on Wednesday — identified as Idris Ali, Rasoul Ahmad Rasoul, and Azad Shojai — over espionage charges, according to reports. Iran previously executed three other men following Israel’s airstrike operation on June 13: Mohammad Amin Mahdavi Shayesteh, Majid Masibi, and Esmail Fekri.

Iran’s judiciary claimed the three men who were hanged most recently “attempted to import equipment into the country to carry out assassinations.”
Iran is holding several other people on death row, including Swedish-Iranian dual national Ahmadreza Djalali, who has been in captivity for over seven years. His family denies he was a spy for Israel.
This year alone, at least nine people have been executed on similar charges, drawing condemnation from human rights activists over the lack of a fair trial in these cases.
Amnesty International said Djalali underwent a “grossly unfair trial” in 2017 based on “forced ‘confessions'” through torture and threats. Djalali’s life is believed to be in imminent danger.
Tehran’s regime is imprisoning several hundred alleged Israeli spies and Iranian dissidents in the name of national security. By Tuesday, Iran had arrested over 500 people for suspected ties to Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad. The number of arrests is now more than 700, according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Hengaw “strongly condemns this latest wave of arrests and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s continued use of national security charges to suppress civil liberties, including freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and due process rights,” the human rights group said. “Hengaw urges the international community and human rights bodies to respond swiftly and ensure independent monitoring and intervention regarding the situation of detainees across Iran.”

Wednesday’s hangings came one day after a tentative ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump took effect. Despite ceasefire violations committed by Iran and Israel, the truce is holding so far.
Nearly 600 people have been executed in Iran on all charges this year alone, per Norway’s non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights. Iran has the second-highest number of executions after China.
