Gov. Kim Reynolds (R-IA) signed a bill that bans most abortions in Iowa at six weeks late into pregnancy on Friday, just a few days after the state's Republican-controlled legislature passed the bill.
The six-week abortion ban took effect immediately as Reynolds signed the legislation at the Family Leadership Summit, CNN reported. The bill was passed in the state on Tuesday after an all-day special legislative session.

“This week, in a rare and historic special session, the Iowa legislature voted for a second time to reject the inhumanity of abortion and pass the fetal heartbeat law,” said Reynolds ahead of signing the bill.

Despite the legislation’s success in Iowa, the ban is already facing a legal challenge. Planned Parenthood, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and Iowa’s ACLU all filed a joint lawsuit against the state and its governor less than 12 hours after the bill’s passage.
The bill forbids abortion services once cardiac activity can be detected in the fetus, typically around the six-week mark. If physicians are caught providing an abortion, disciplinary action would be determined by the Iowa Board of Medicine, though the language is vague on how punishment will be enforced.
The law includes limited exceptions for times when the life of the mother is at risk, for miscarriages, and for fetal abnormalities deemed by a physician “incompatible with life.” To be exempt from the law, pregnancies resulting from rape must be reported within 45 days, and those resulting from incest must be reported within 140 days.

Abortion was previously legal in Iowa up to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Iowa is the latest state in a growing list that has rolled back abortion protections since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022.
