British IndyCar driver Katherine Legge will be the sole female competitor at Sunday's 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 and said auto racing is the only sport where men and women are on equal terms.

"I think it's the only sport in the world that we can compete equally with the guys," Legge said in a Friday interview with Today.

"If somebody asked me to bench press as much as a guy, that's just not gonna happen, but driving a racecar for 500 miles...I think I got it.

Legge, 42, is making her return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a third time since she debuted at the 500 in 2013.

Being the sole female racer, the "Brickyard" does not weigh lightly on her.

"Ten years ago, mostly all the fans were guys," she said. "This time around, you see almost 50% women, and it's been incredible."

"They come up to you, and they say, 'You're racing for every woman out here,' and when my daughter grows up, she knows she can be anything that she wants to be."

Nine women have competed in the race since 1977, and Legge set a record last Saturday for the fastest female qualifying lap.

The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 will begin Sunday at 12:45 p.m.
