If you want to get famous on social media for your conservative political commentary, there is one surefire way to go viral and achieve your goal.

All you have to do is be a fairly attractive female, film yourself doing a normal domestic activity such as cooking or ironing, and say something that qualifies as sort of right-wing while being somewhat provocative and reactionary and punctuate it with offensive language.

If you do this, you can rest assured that thousands of men, young and old, will swarm on your account and gawk at your acts of bravery. All the while existing influencers will offer tepid endorsements while feigning discomfort at some of the less savory elements of your video. And voila: instant fame.

This is the tale of the political e-girl influencer. A subject of lust and envy who speaks in generic talking points and garners a legion of fans. These fans are primarily lonely men infatuated by her and feel compelled to respond and interact with every post she makes out of an abounding feeling she is the one they have been waiting for all their lives.

In many ways, these viral social media stars bring to the surface dark parts of the culture of social media. In the comments section of the e-girl influencer are dozens of men whose words range from adulation to marriage proposals, to being downright lustful and vulgar.

In the same vein, these viral social media influencers feed off of the attention they receive. To be adored and loved is a basic human desire, and the internet provides it aplenty. But the infatuation of thousands of faceless internet profiles is vapid and fleeting and only leaves one hungry for more.

In short order, the e-girl turns her moment of viral fame into a grift. A grift that sees her profit off of her newfound platform and turn her social media account into a waterfall of unoriginal content that is sure to showcase her physical attributes.

Her fans, meanwhile, continue to populate her comments section, proudly declaring her the prophetess of truth while desperately trying to get her to notice their pitiful accounts and feel a modicum of satisfaction for the infatuation they feel. Alongside them are her haters, who, rather than scroll past, cannot help but add a voice of negativity to the conversation behind a wall of anonymity.

But no “truth bomb” that the viral influencer can share is worth the toxicity that accompanies it. Those who follow these people should ask themselves what precisely is the benefit of following and listening to these people blabber unoriginal talking points to a camera.

Some may claim it is educational. But nothing the viral influencer says can or ever will serve as a substitute for critical thinking and self-education that requires patient study and true intellectual curiosity. Others may claim it is because she “speaks the truth.” But anyone who knows the truth does not need to hear another speak it in an elementary manner.

Instead of looking for attention from the wrong people and in all the wrong places, the e-girl and her fans should get off the internet and talk to someone in real life, go outside, or read a book.
