Israeli forces, during the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks, were able to kill dozens of Hamas naval forces as they sought to infiltrate Israel via the sea. Hamas's naval forces have made similar attempts in the aftermath of the attack as well.

Israeli military leaders have said their aim is to remove Hamas from power in Gaza and destroy their military capabilities following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of more than a thousand Israelis, the vast majority of whom were civilians. The terrorists overpowered the Israeli border and infiltrated many communities near the Israel-Gaza border, where they slaughtered men, women, and children, many of whom showed signs of torture.
Israel's military has since launched a significant military response that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians and an unclear number of Hamas terrorists. The Hamas-backed Gaza Health Ministry has said more than 10,000 Palestinians have died since the outbreak of the war, though that total does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, and the Biden administration has cast doubt on the veracity of its tallies.
