Israeli military leaders have accused Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization in power in Gaza, of embedding itself in and underneath Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, held a briefing on Friday in which he alleged that Hamas had several underground complexes under the largest hospital in Gaza, which Hamas used to direct the attacks against Israel. Shifa Hospital has 1,500 beds and more than 4,000 staffers.

“Hamas uses Shifa Hospital as a shield for Hamas terror infrastructure,” Hagari said. “Hamas wages war from hospitals. By operating from these hospitals, Hamas not only endangers the lives of Israeli civilians but also exploits innocent Gazan civilians."

Hagari alleged that Hamas is using fuel from the hospital to further its own gains, even as humanitarian concerns rise in the Gaza Strip. The IDF released aerial imagery that supposedly identified the different wings of the hospital and also pointed out where Hamas's underground complexes were located. The imagery supposedly showed how Hamas used the hospital to hide a number of command posts and entry points into the tunnel system.

The Israel Defense Forces released imagery of Hamas's headquarters under Shifa Hospital in Gaza.

He said Israel has “concrete evidence” that “hundreds of terrorists flooded into the hospital to hide” following the Oct. 7 massacre in which Hamas terrorists burst through the border and slaughtered roughly 1,400 people in southern Israel. The vast majority of the victims were civilians, including women and children.

Hamas has built a maze of tunnels underneath some of the most densely populated areas of Gaza in an effort to move freely without fear of Israeli airstrikes and to hide their weapons caches. The intent is also for Israel to cause civilian casualties amid the country's pursuit of terrorists, which only inflames international concerns and outrage.

Izzat al Rishq, a senior member of Hamas's political bureau, said the Israeli military’s allegations were false, according to the Times of Israel.

“There’s no basis in truth in what the spokesman of the enemy army stated,” the senior member said. Rishq also accused the IDF of falsifying the allegations in order to “pave the way for a new massacre to be committed against our people.”

Israel has long accused Hamas of using Palestinians as human shields to protect themselves.

The IDF announced on Friday night that its "ground forces are expanding the ground activity this evening," though it's unclear if this is the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Gaza.
