NextImg:Hunter Biden Investigation: Ted Cruz calls David Weiss special counsel appointment a 'cover-up'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is the latest Republican lawmaker to weigh in on David Weiss's appointment as the special counsel in the Hunter Biden affairs, calling it a "cover-up" and "disgraceful."

Weiss's appointment was made on Friday by Attorney General Merrick Garland, who stated it was "in the public interest to appoint him" to the position of special counsel. Cruz expressed his displeasure in the appointment of Weiss on Sunday, who claimed that Weiss had spent the last five years covering the investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden.

"Well, this appointment is camouflage, and it's cover-up," Cruz said on Sunday Morning Futures. "I think it’s disgraceful. Listen, David Weiss was the U.S. attorney hand-picked to lead this investigation, who spent the last five years covering it up. David Weiss, who was personally selected by the two Democrat senators from Delaware, Tom Carper, and Chris Coons. For five years, the investigation has gone nowhere — other than to protect Hunter Biden and Joe Biden."

The Texas senator also discussed how Weiss is subject to "two whistle-blower complaints" from IRS officials, both of whom have stated they have "never seen an investigation like this" throughout their time in law enforcement.

"They said that the Department of Justice, lawyers working for David Weiss protected the Biden family, that they gave heads up to Hunter Biden before search warrants were executed, presumably so that he could hide incriminating evidence, that they refused to allow them to ask any questions at all about the big guy, about Joe Biden," Cruz said.

The special counsel role is provided with a budget and can request outside attorneys to help with the case. Additionally, special counsels are empowered to bring down indictments, as well as issue subpoenas and search warrants.

On Thursday, Cruz stated that the evidence against Biden regarding bribery allegations involving foreign oligarchs is “growing and growing.” He also said that if it’s found out that Biden is guilty of bribery, he should be “removed from office" and "prosecuted.”

Other Republicans have shared their thoughts on Weiss's appointment, including 2024 presidential candidate and former Vice President Mike Pence, who claimed that the appointment was "appropriate." He also stated he was confident that Republicans in the House of Representatives "are going to continue to bring forward the facts in this case."

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who is also running for president in 2024, described Weiss's appointment as a "forceful sign" that nothing has changed in the DOJ.

"It's bad for justice, and frankly, it's bad for everyday Americans who ask the question, 'Can I trust the DOJ?' The answer is emphatically no," Scott said.
