Election Day is not for another 49 days, but voting is already underway in some key states as the presidential campaign hits the home stretch.

While voting is underway, it is not too late to register to vote in several states that have already sent out ballots. Here is how to register to vote in these eight states and Washington, D.C., where voting has begun or is slated to start soon.

Minnesota

In the North Star State, voters can register either online, using a paper form, or at a polling place.

To register online or via paper form, eligible voters need either a Minnesota driver’s license, Minnesota identification card number, or the last four digits of his or her social security number, along with an email address.

When registering to vote at a polling place either on Election Day or during in-person early voting, a voter must bring either a state-issued ID card with name and address, including a driver’s license or tribal ID, a combination of an “approved photo ID” and a document with name and address, a registered voter or staff member of a residential facility who can “vouch” that your address is correct, a combination of a voter ID and a student housing list, a valid registration within the same voting precinct, or a notice of late registration received in the mail.

Under a law passed in 2023, all eligible adults who receive a state-issued ID are automatically registered to vote.

The deadline for voters to register to vote online before the Nov. 5 election is 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 15, while the deadline for those applying via paper form is 5 p.m. on Oct. 15. Voters can also register at any polling place through Election Day.

South Dakota

In the Mount Rushmore State, voters can register to vote either in person or by mail.

The form requires voters to provide basic information, including name, address, and date of birth, along with either the ID number from his or her South Dakota driver’s license or state-issued ID card or the last four digits of his or her social security number.

The registration form must be submitted to the county auditor. Voter registration forms may be filled out in person at the local county auditor’s office, a driver’s license station, a city finance office, a public assistance agency that provides food stamps, a Department of Human Services office, or a military recruitment office.

The deadline for voters to register in the state is Oct. 21. Mail registration forms must be received by that date, according to the state.

Virginia

In the Old Dominion, voters can register to vote either online, by mail, or in person.

The online portal requires eligible residents to have a valid Virginia driver’s license or state-issued ID card and their social security number. Once registered, voters will have to present a valid ID when going to the polling place to vote.

The deadline for registration forms to be filled out prior to the Nov. 5 election is Oct. 15. Voter registration sent through the mail must be postmarked by Oct. 15. Voters may also register through Election Day and use a provisional ballot to cast their vote.

Vermont

In the Green Mountain State, residents can register to vote online, by mail, or at a clerk’s office.

To register online, residents must present a copy of either a valid photo ID, a current utility bill or bank statement, or a government document including the applicant’s residential address. For application by mail, the resident must include a copy of one of those forms in addition to either the last four digits of his or her social security number or the applicant’s Vermont driver’s license number or personal ID number.

First-time registrants must also take the state’s voter’s oath.

Voter registration applications are available in all three forms through Election Day, but the mailed form must be received by Nov. 5.

In the Keystone State, residents can register to vote online, by mail, at a county election office, or at several other state government agencies.

On the voter registration form, applicants can provide their Pennsylvania driver’s license number, state-issued ID card number, or the last four digits of their social security number. When voting for the first time after completing the application, the voter must provide an approved form of ID.

Residents can register to vote in the Nov. 5 election through Oct. 21. Mailed voter registration applications must be received by that date.
